Leatherman Wave Original Multi-Tool Review
Leatherman Wave Original. This mult-tool was introduced in 1998 and retired in 2004. Its one of the first multi-tools to have on hand opening blades on the exterior of the tool.

nice one mate
Thanks mate
Hi Colin I owned this tool for about 6 years before upgrading to the ti charge
It was showing its age and i managed to break the serrated blade, which shape i prefer, to the new. And as you rightly said the scissors are better than the new design… far better I would say. Had a nice red leather sheath as well which I think was also better than the new design. thx again for the trip down memory lane.
regards Dave
@davetogo123 Hi Dave, thanks for taking the time to view and comment, unfortunately I didn’t get a sheath with my Wave, that red leather sheath sounds very nice.
This starts making me regret getting my Leatherman Freestyle a while back, but then again. I wonder what tools in this MultiTool that you in general make use of on a typical excursion? — and not just around the house.
Good job though!
@Varghjarta Thanks mate, I like the Freestyle I think its a better edc tool however I do prefer the Wave for the outdoors.
@ColinOutdoors I went out and got a wave the day after your reply, problem solved.
Its much heavier then the Freestyle but it’s a much much better MT in all aspects, thank you for the inspiration!
@Varghjarta Cool, i’m really glad you like your Wave, nice one, hope it serves you well
I own a Leatherman Surge, it is very similar with the Wave, only it weights 14 ounces and is alot larger… I love it and use it all the time. I would never get rid of it! -Nax
I like the surge too! its a beast of a tool
nice review
@WolfTac86 Thank you my friend
Hi Colin,
My Wave arrived today (new version with the locking mechanism)
really happy with it, superb quality. Also got the Nylon case, Leatherman Monarch 300 pentorch and engraving all thrown in!
I noticed that the elastic sidewalls of the carry case have two layers and there’s just enough room to slide the torch (or a torch of a similar size: maglight etc) between the layers. Handy! and on the other side I squeezed a small pencil in there (Ikea’s finest!)
@HOXTON13 Nice one my friend, the Wave is one of the best tools on the market, very cool you got the Monarch 300 as well. Lol, got to love those Ikea pencils

Geez… we Europeans are getting ripped off… the Charge TTI here costs 230 USD
@FighterAceee94 Yeah its pretty steep, the best thing is to shop around and sometimes you can find it for under £100
I had an original Wave that I bought in 1999. I used it extensively for years. The smallest flat head screw driver chipped while I was trying to free up a rusted screw. The wire cutters got a nick from cutting a steel wire (didn’t know it was hardened steel wire). The handles had gotten a little loose as well. Just sent it in to Leatherman and they sent me a BRAND NEW ONE!!!! New model has lots of improvements. Leatherman has great customer service. I also have the Expanse e33T knife.
@shaggyusm26 also getting the Skeletool CX for Christmas.
@shaggyusm26 Excellent my friend, yeah I have heard Leatherman have brilliant customer service, I have the new Wave as well. great tool and good improvements on the original
@ColinOutdoors The ONLY thing I miss about the old Wave is the scissors. I think the scissors on the original may be superior to the scissors on the new Wave. They were larger and felt more substantial in my opinion. The new scissors seem not quite as well built and much smaller. Your thoughts?
@shaggyusm26 Nice one, I love the Skeletool
@shaggyusm26 Yeah I totally agree with you, the large scissors on the original Wave were superior in my opinion
Colinoutdoors, does the leatherman wave cut into your palm when you are are accessing the exterior tools.
@enpoer Yeah unfortunately it does, so it really depends on how much work you do with the knife blade, thanks for watching my friend
