UK laws on knife carry are amongst the strictest in the world. We are not allowed to carry knives with any locking mechanism and blades longer than3 inches. There is a very good reason why Spyderco named one of their knives UKPK. It’s a Caly 3 with a slip joint system rather than a lock back. Like this it became legal to carry. You would think that the local production would be plentiful but actually apart from some pen knives from 200 years ago still made in Sheffield (sarcasm!) there is not much choice. Until now my only legal options were a Swiss Army Knife (Soldier) and a Custom made Laguiole (French Slip joint). Not so long ago I have hosted a knife collector’s gathering and I have been introduced to friction folders. This style of locking mechanism is very ancient but its simplicity makes it impervious to time. I had the change to fiddle with one and I was really seduced by the simplicity of its lines and the way it felt in my hand. This knife is actually called Friction Folder and it is custom made by really cool guy from California called Michael Morris (www.michaelmorrisknives.com). He is using W1 or W2 steel from files and cut them into shape. The handle on this model is Ivory White Micarta and it feels really slick and smooth. Its tiny blades comes razor sharp and is really easy to maintain. Despite its V grind all you need to get it back to laser sharpness is a few passes on the hone.
